should i text her after the first date? yes. here’s what to say

If your question is “Should I text her after the first date?”, you’re asking the wrong question. You should be asking “What should I text her after the first date?” or “When should I text her?”

even if the date didn’t go well?

Even if the date didn’t go well. (But more on that later.)

when should you text her?

I’ve always appreciated a message from a guy really quickly after we’ve parted ways, because it really cuts all the second guessing. It’s really easy, too - just something like “Get home safe! Let me know when you’re home” - this has always made me feel like he’s actually 1. invested, and 2. gentlemanly.

follow up later with something specific

Thank her for meeting you, tell her you enjoyed spending time together. But instead of just saying something mid like “I had a great time” (which is so forgettable and generic), try something like “I really enjoyed hearing about why you decided to switch careers”, or “I’m still sniggering at the peanut butter story on the train”.

Specific pointers tell her you were actually present and listening, following up with them shows her you’re invested.

remember: we don’t play games here.

If you’d like to see her again, say so. Don’t wait for her to initiate. Don’t wait for her to match your energy so you can “assess the situation”. There is no benefit to waiting several days just to avoid looking “too keen”. Just do it.

Similar to what I talked about in my messaging guide, you now have so many more interests / places that she would have likely brought up during the date that you can now suggest going with her.

The second date shouldn’t come out of nowhere - it should grow naturally from your conversation.

what if i don’t want a second date?

Even if you don’t think you’re compatible, or even if you think you’ll never see her again - text her.

You don’t owe someone a relationship, but you do owe them basic respect.

A simple message - even a short one - shows maturity. It shows that you’re able to communicate your feelings with clarity and nuance. Like:

“Hey! Thanks for taking the time to meet me today. I really enjoyed getting to know you, but I don’t think we’re quite the right fit. It was lovely meeting you and wishing you all the best!”

(Please don’t copy paste this message - make it your own.)

Is it uncomfortable? Yes. But it is also kinder than inventing excuses about suddenly becoming “really busy at work”, lying about why you’re “responding less”, or ghosting her entirely.

The hardest part of dating usually isn't finding the perfect text or thing to say - it''s learning how to communicate clearly without second-guessing yourself.
