coffee meets bagel just launched CMB 2.0. what does this mean for you?

ICYMI, Coffee Meets Bagel (CMB) recently launched version 2.0 of their app - intended to combat dating fatigue, while remaining true to its goal of helping serious daters find meaningful connections.

CMB by nature has always been intended to be anti-swipe - with curated “bagels” (potential matches) surfaced to you once a day. From personal experience, sometimes you get through these really quickly, but sometimes you get some really good matches. (My husband was a bagel that came up at 12pm one day!)

So what does this mean for you? Let’s take a look at the changes (that should have reached you by now if you’re based in Singapore).

1: topic suggestions

If you’re tired of sending / receiving “hey” as your opening message, this new feature is made for you.

A message composed just for you, based on her profile and chat context

It might be tempting to just plug and play the default messages, especially since it’s more specific and contextualised than a lazy “hey”, but I strongly suggest editing the message to make it sound more like you.

For e.g. her caption is “At my favourite cafe in town, guess where?” and the Topic Suggestion is “Wow, that cafe looks so nice! Where is it?”

If you’re into coffee, you might want to hazard a guess on top of the topic suggestion - “That cafe looks so nice! Is it (insert cafe here)?”. Or you can say “That cafe looks so nice! What do you like about it?”

It adds a bit more flavour and shows a little bit more of your own personality and what you think of first.

2: headlines

Headlines are a golden opportunity to highlight something unique and real about yourself, without the confines of a prompt

CMB says that this is a “simple yet powerful way to express yourself” - basically, a no-context, no-prompt headline about yourself. To me, this is yet another way to inject a layer of authenticity and realness about yourself, and another opportunity to highlight something specific about yourself that makes you different from others.

You could go the funny route - “Saw a couple across me having an awkward first date and thought hey, I want that for myself too”.

Or you could talk about a goal you have - “On a lifelong mission to visit the 7 Ancient Wonders of the World because I read about them in a book once. Currently: 3/7”

I’ll be writing another post about this shortly, so stay tuned.

3: real dates

Real Dates removes the sometimes-awkward “how should I ask her out” phase to get you from match to meet.

This feature will soon include collabs with partners, creating more intentional, meaningful date options for you

While it surfaces dating-style preferences and suggests some places for you, it of course is fully editable so feel free to add your own. If you’re looking for a list of non-boring first date ideas that make things less awkward, check out my list of first date ideas here.

4: smarter, machine learning matchmaking

Of course, no app upgrade is complete without some fancy new tech. Your 12pm curated bagels are now a result of a completely rebuilt recommendation engine, powered by advanced machine learning. It learns from your behaviour and optimises for mutual compatibility, which means that it’s an algorithm that prioritises people who may like you back!

bonus: wedding sponsorship program

Eligible CMB couples can apply for a small goodwill sponsorship to contribute towards a special touch on their wedding day. This includes things like a dessert table, coffee and bagels (of course), and - probably most fun of all - CMB Premium codes for your single friends.

You can reach out to weddings@coffeemeetsbagel.app to learn more (and find out if you’re eligible based on their availability and T&Cs).

Fun fact: All the updates in CMB 2.0 have been informed by real feedback from the CMB community - according to Shn Juay, CEO of CMB Worldwide. The goal? To push back against dating fatigue, to return to intentional dating, and ultimately, as CMB says - to date for something real.

If you’re still struggling to make sense of these new features or want to optimise your profile and are not quite sure where to start, you can book a profile audit with Wan Ting.
